Steve was rescued in September and is the kindest gentlest little giant
ever. He had spinal surgery but the results were not good. He has been
recovering at the vet's but has developed sores on his bum from sitting up
all the time - he is so curious - and has started crying. He desperately
needs a foster home or a real home with a smooth floor and an owner that
will look after him, change his diapers until his wheels come and then will
take him for walks with his new mean machine.  He will be half pit bull-half
machine!  Watch his videos on YouTube (Steve1 and Steve2) and you will
see a dog that is so content he doesn't even realize he has no use of his
back legs.

Update - November 3:  Steve has lost a lot of weight and his curiosity is
going to kill him.  You can see the wounds on his bum and legs from
always sitting up looking around.  He has been moved from the vet's care
to a human doctors house, who will look after him and treat his wounds
and give him more close attention.

Update - November 6:  Steve's wheels were ordered from France (550e)
but he needs a bigger set, so they will be exchanged today.

Εχουμε παραγγειλει καροτσακι!
Ο Στηβ διασωθηκε τον περασμενο Σεπτεμβρη
και ειναι ενας αγαθος γιγαντας. Εκανε
επεμβαση στην σπονδυλικη του στηλη για να
μπορεσει να περπατησει ξανα. Δυστυχως η
επεμβαση δεν ειχε θετικα αποτελεσματα.
Βρισκεται εκτοτε στον κτηνιατρο. Το σωμα του
παθαινει κατακλισεις κ αρχιζει να πληγιαζει
στους γλουτους επειδη δεν μπορει να σηκωθει
καθολου. Αρχισε να κλαιει και να
παραπονιεται. Χρειαζεται ενα σπιτι να τον
φιλοξενησει ή να τον υιοθετησει μονιμα.
Χρειαζεται αρκετη φροντιδα, περιποιηση κ
υπομονη εως οτου φτασει το καροτσακι που
του εχουμε παραγγειλει. Δειτε το βιντεακι του
στο facebook και θα καταλαβετε οτι δεν
αναγνωριζει το γεγονος οτι ειναι παραλυτος και
μπορει να ζησει με αυτη του την ιδιαιτεροτητα.
Αρκει να του βρουμε ενα σπιτι να τον φροντιζει!

Foster and full adoption homes will be considered
for Steve but serious enquiries only please! He
needs more tender loving care than most and it
will be messy but there is so much more to
adopting Steve than hooking him up to his wheels
so he can run around.  You must keep him
comfortable and rotate him when he lays down so
he does not have such sores, there will be lots of
laundry and paper diapers but the love that we felt
for this dog was unreal.  

Even being carried in for surgery with a muzzle on,
he was licking the hands of those who carried him.
 There was not a dry eye in the clinic.  Please help
him run again and enjoy life!

HISTORY OF STEVE: Ο Στηβ Μακ Κουιν διασωθηκε μεσα στα μεσανυχτα αρχες Οκτωβρη από την Κικη
Καραθαναση και την εθελοντρια Ελεν  ενώ προετοιμαζαν τον ΣκυλοΜαραθωνιο. Ο Στηβ καθοταν μπροστα σε
ένα συνεργειο στη Ν. Χαλκηδονα. Μας αφησε να τον τυλιξουμε με μια κουβερτα και να τον σηκωσουμε να τον
βαλουμε στο αμαξι της Κικης. Ηταν αρκετα ευδιαθετος και ηρεμος, ωστοσο δεν ειχαμε που να τον παμε. Το
καταφυγιο δεν ηταν το ιδανικο μερος για ένα παραλυτο σκυλι και δεν ειχαμε διαθεσιμο κλουβι για να μπει. Ετσι
αποφασισαμε κ τον κρατησαμε για τη νυχτα στο γραφειο της Κικης μεσα στο μπανιο. Του στρωσαμε
εφημεριδες και εμεινε εκει ολη τη νυχτα. Το επομενο πρωι αρχισαμε τα τηλεφωνα για να δουμε ποιος θα τον
αναλαβει στο εξης.

Το να εισαι πιτ μπουλ κ μαλιστα παραλυτο στην Ελλαδα σημαινει μια ζωη μιζερη που σερνεσαι κ εκλιπαρεις για
ευθανασια.

Φαινοταν τοσο ευτυχισμενος και με τοση ορεξη κ διαθεση για ζωη, κατι που εκανε την εθελοντρια Ελεν να το
παρει προσωπικα και να αρχισει έναν αγωνα να του βρει ένα σπιτι.

Ο Στηβ υπεβληθη σε χειρουργικη επεμβαση στην σπονδυλικη στηλη. Όμως ένα κοκκαλο ειχε υποστει σοβαρη
βλαβη με αποτελεσμα να μην μπορει να αποκατασταθει η ζημια. Αρχισε να παθαινει κατακλισεις και να αρχιζει
να πληγιαζει στον πωπο, τους αγκωνες κ τους γοφους γιατι δεν μπορουσε να σηκωθει.

Το επομενο βημα για την Ελεν ηταν να ψαξει στο φεισμπουκ να βρει δωρεες για να του αγορασουμε καροτσακι.
Ετσι κ εγινε κ μια καταπληκτικη γυναικα από την Σουηδια δωρισε 300ευρω. Το καροτσακι τον βοηθαει να
κινειται κ να μην πληγιαζει το κορμι του.

Είναι ένα γλυκυτατο σκυλακι, του αρεσει να επεξεργαζεται να παντα γυρω του και να βαζει το κεφαλι του στο
ποδι σου και να σε παρακολουθει όταν κανεις δουλειες. Απολαμβανει την ανθρωπινη συντροφια κ μοιαζει να
είναι ‘απο σπιτι’. Το πρωτο βραδυ κρατιοταν κ δεν εκανε τσιτσα μεσα στο γραφειο παρα προσπαθουσε να βγει
στην αυλη. Οποιος είναι αυτος που τον εχασε ή τον εγκατελειψε ποτε δεν τον αναζητησε, οποτε θα πεπει να του
βρουμε πλεον ένα μονιμο σπιτι.

Συντομα θα μαθει να χρησιμοποιει το καροτσακι του (προς το παρον φιλοξενειται στο σπιτι μιας εθελοντριας
που του φροντιζει τις πληγες). Εμεις ψαχνουμε ένα μονιμο σπιτι για τον Στηβ σε οποιοδηποτε μερος του
κοσμου που επιτρεπονται τα πιτ μπουλ και δεν θα χρειαστει να περασει καποιο διαστημα σε καραντινα.

Με το καροτσακι μπορει να περπαταει κ να προχωραει αφου σπρωχνει με τα μπροστινα του ποδαρακια.
Μπορει να θελει λιγο περισσοτερη δουλιτσα από ένα σκυλακι αρτιμελες αλλα αξιζει τον κοπο να του δωσουμε
μια ευκαιρια για μια καλυτερη ζωη κ εκεινος θα φροντισει να σας ανταμοιψει με την ευγνομωσυνη του!
NOVEMBER 10, 2010 UPDATE:

Steve has been making great progress at his foster
home with Sophoula and on Friday he was to be
taken to be fostered at two vets in Nea Halkidonia
until he is adopted but the for 'personal family'
reasons this is not happening and now Steve has
no options again!

There is one man who will look after him but he
wants to be paid (not cool) and a kennel that could
take him but won't (more not coolness).

So, if you have a garden where Steve can spend his
days air-healing his wounds and getting used to
his wheels, please please please call Kiki at

We found a small kennel that will keep Steve for
150 euros per month. The young man there, looked
very tender and Steve was pushing himself on him
for hugs. This man was recommended by a lady of
Stray.gr.

Steve is going to sleep in the house and is
supposed to take long walks on his wheels. So,
today me and Sofoula took Steve there.
Steve is now a different dog then the one I saw
coming from the vet.

He was running quickly on his wheels, following
Sofoula everywhere, he even tried to play football
with me. His wounds look better. I sat by him in the
car and he pushed himself tightly in my chest. I
hope that the kennel will prove good. We are going
to pay visits to him as often as can be although it
isn't near.

There is a lady who sms'd me offering to help with
his expenses. I call her tomorrow.

And 5 minutes ago a lady from Denmark called for
adopting. She only wonders if it's realistic while
having 4 dogs, one of them a very energetic boxer. I
told her that Steve on his wheels has no balance
problem and he also had no problem living with my
dogs in my office. In the kennel, surrounded by
other dogs we will find out for sure. I feel full of hope
for him.

(Please do not stop donating or trying to find a
home for Steve. We receive good news and bad
news daily with our dogs. Until Steve's adoption
papers have been signed and he is out the door
with a smile on his face - he is not adopted.  He can
only live at the kennel for as long as we can pay the
bill but then he still needs a home. Always be
vigilant and keep looking for a home for Steve or any
of our other dogs. Thank you, Helen)
November 19 Update

Steve is enjoying the new kennel very much and is
running with the other dogs and can DO STAIRS
with his wheels!  (We thought there would be videos
but the camera operator was not familiar with this
option and they did not work out! So we will wait until
the next kennel visit for new photos and videos.)
November 23 Update

Steve has injured his front leg and it is difficult for him to get around in his wheels.  The terrain at the kennel
is suitable for an able bodied dog but not necessarily the greatest for a paralyzed dog with wheels.  We are
watching his progress and maybe he will need x-rays to find out what is wrong.
December 8 Update

Just got word that Steve's front leg has recovered enough that he was able to get the gate open at the
kennel and make a run for it with his wheels!

Can you just imagine what drivers thought seeing this pitbull motoring down the side of the road, tongue a
wagging and a big big smile on his face?? Priceless!!  (Yes, he was tracked down by the kennel operator).

I hope someone steps forward soon to adopt him but it not, we will get him sterilized and administer
vaccinations so to get him read for transport abroad because I know he will find a home in Canada or the
another country that does not have a prohibition on sterilized, paralyzed pitbulls.

I mean, how must trouble can he really get into?! You decide after the jailbreak earlier this week!!

December 12 Update

We have received a serious enquiry about adoption for Steve that we are very excited about!

Let's hope that Steve gets his Christmas wish and will be heading for the airport really soon!

''Τον Στηβ τον βρήκαμε μια Κυριακή βράδυ του Σεπτέμβρη,
χτυπημένο, με παράλυτα τα πίσω πόδια του. Στις λίγες ώρες που
κρατήθηκε  μέχρι να πάει στο γιατρό, μας έκαψε την καρδιά καθώς
σερνόταν για να φτάσει κοντά μας και να γυρέψει χάδια. Την άλλη
μέρα μεταφέρθηκε στο γιατρό. Για λόγους ασφαλείας του βάλανε
φίμωτρο για τη μεταφορά. Μέσα από το φίμωτρο έγλυφε όποιον
έφτανε.

Η εγχείρισή του δεν πήγε καλά. Το υλικό που πίεζε το νωτιαίο
μυελό αφαιρέθηκε αλλά η κίνηση δεν επανήλθε. Ο Στηβ έμεινε
παράλυτος. Με τη δωρεά μιας Ελβετίδας αγοράστηκαν ρόδες με τις
οποίες γρήγορα έμαθε να τρέχει σαν σίφουνας. Μένει σε μια
πανσιόν, όπου, το εξαιρετικό παληκάρι που τον φιλοξενεί, τον
κρατάει μέσα στο σπίτι του.

Εδώ και κάποιες μέρες, κάτι καλό άρχισε να του συμβαίνει.
Πρώτα, άρχισε να ελέγχει κατά το μεγαλύτερο μέρος τις
ανάγκες του. Υστερα, άρχισε να κουνάει την ουρά του. Μετά. το
πίσω αριστερό πόδι του άρχισε να τεντώνεται και να κινείται
ελαφρά, δεν ήταν πια ένα κουρελάκι.

Μάθαμε για μια Αγγλίδα που κάνει φυσιοθεραπεία σε σκυλιά
και κατάφερε να κάνει ένα σκυλί σε κατάσταση ανάλογη του
Στηβ, να περπατήσει. Θα χρειαστούν για την αρχή 3 επισκέψεις
τη βδομάδα- αργότερα θα αραιώσουν. Το κόστος θα είναι 300
ευρώ το μήνα. Αποφασίσαμε να προσπαθήσουμε να μην του
στερήσουμε αυτή την ευκαιρία.

Ζητάμε από όποιον μπορεί να βοηθήσει για τη θεραπεία του.
Δίνοντας πολλοί από λίγα θα καταφέρουμε να συγκεντρώσουμε τα
χρήματα για να ξαναδώσουμε πίσω στον Στηβ τη ζωή του.

Σήμερα δοκίμασε για πρώτη φορά τις ρόδες που του αγοράστηκαν
με τη δωρεά μιας Ελβετίδας. Αναρρώνει από τις κατακλίσεις που
του δημιουργήθηκαν το μήνα που έμεινε στο κλουβί του
κτηνιάτρου, καθώς επιμένει να ξαπλώνει από την ίδια μεριά.
Αναρώνει και η ψυχούλα του από την ταλαιπωρία. Eίναι ένα ζώο
ειδικό, γλυκό και αξιαγάπητο και χρειάζεται ένα σπίτι επειγόντως,
γιατί εκεί που τώρα κρατιέται δεν  μπορεί να μείνει επ' αόριστον. ''
Steve was found on a Sunday night in September 2010.
He was hit and paralyzed in his back legs. In the few
hours he spent with us until we take him to the vet he
broke our hearts while he was dragging his body to
move close to us and look for cuddles. The next morning
he was taken to the vet. For safety reasons we put him a
muzzle for the transport. Through the muzzle he was
licking everyone he could reach.

His operation did not go well. The material that was
pressing his spinal cord was removed but the
movement did not come back. Steve was officially
paralyzed. With a generous and kind donation by a
Swiss lady we bought some wheels and soon enough
he was running like the wind with them. Now he lives at
a kennel, where the owner truly loves and cares about
him a lot and keeps him inside his home!

The last days something wonderful is happening.
Firstly he started controlling his needs. Then he
started wagging his tail. And last but not least his back
left leg started moving a bit.

We recently found out that an English lady who
practices physiotherapy in dogs has already made a
paralyzed dog like Steve to walk. It will take for start 3
visits the week to her center and later they will
become less often. The cost will be 300euros per
month. We decided to try this as well and give him the
chance to walk!

We ask anyone who could donate for his therapy. Giving
just a few all of us we can gather the money that we
need to try and make him walk again. To give his life
back! He recovers from his sores that were caused by
his constant sitting on his cage since he insisted on
sitting on only one side. His soul is recovering too from
all this suffering. He is a special dog, sweet, loving and
needs a good home right away because he cannot stay
where he is forever.
