Champion Fundraisers!
When Kiki K. and I took Odysseus and Snickers to St. Catherine’s school to meet the adorable Brownie Troop, their Troop Leader Daphne suggested a Sponsored Silence to raise money for the Shelter. I seriously thought she was joking! But this morning she called and said the girls had successfully completed one hour of silence and raised 408 euros for the Shelter! Unbelievable!!
If a group of uncontrollable chatterboxes can zip-it for an hour, think of what you can do! Be creative. People love fun ways to get involved. We are so amazingly crazily happy today!

Received this moring from Vol F:
I am so very sorry to hear about these poisonings, that occur at the same time when the Acropolis museum opening is celebrated as an accomplishment of modern Greece.
I am ashamed and speeches once again..
I am also afraid that strays poisoning is another accomplishment of the modern Greek civilization….

Tonight, Vol T and I put on a Clothing Swap at my house. We invited all our friends and volunteers and six ladies came (this is actually a very good turn-out for a Shelter fundraiser through FB on a weekend night!) and we raised 150e towards the care of the poisoned dogs in Nea Filadelphia. We sold a Poison Antidote Kit to a lady whose husband refuses to make their small dog wear a muzzle to the park. So now he has a choice, either put the muzzle on her or inject her as she convulses. She is sure that he will choose the muzzle!
We drank donated wine and ate donated cupcakes, played with the 3 legged foster kitten and the super annoying Snickers the Rescue Dog (who managed to wear her muzzle as a hat for half the evening - we should have called her Houdini!)
Please be inspired to try your hand at a fundraiser for a shelter. You would be amazed at how little effort can go into making a difference. The money raised today will pay for almost all the medicine required for 2 dogs to pull through the recovery process - and all we did was have fun.
Every person who reads this blog has the capability of making change - you just need to believe you can!
Good night!

Dead Yangos
Yangos, after 12 hours struggling for his life, lost the battle and died last night. We have a video but it is too big to post. If any groups would like a copy for their anti-poisoning message, please email.

Earlier this week the Filozoikos Nea Filadelphia was in the process of putting together its annual Summer Street Bazaar when the phone calls started. Someone is poisoning our registered strays with strychnine.
Five dogs in the past three days - four strays who have been tagged, sterilized, and vaccinated by us over the past 4 years, and one dog loved by its owner who ate the poison while on their evening walk. Painful agonizing deaths and those that survive are barely clinging to life. The latest victim is 50+ kilo male and companion of an elderly man and his granddaughter.
So, we have changed gears. Instead of a small bazaar with just a few tables we have decided to go full force and add an additional 20 tables to our bazaar and to do it immediately.
All tables are 25 euros each, standard white plastic bazaar tables with four legs and a table cloth. There are no restrictions on what you can sell except items containing fur. Set-up time and take-down details will be established later in the week.
We will occupy the parallel walking sidewalk along the park on Dekeleias Street and up into the park to the Church. There area has good street and walking traffic and we have been very successful in the past years in this area.
One day only, Sunday June 28th, beginning at approximately 9am until 3pm.
Please contact me at 699-591-7437 to reserve your table. Pre-payment will allow you to pick your placement along the route.
Feel free to pass this entry on to all you know that provide vendor services at fundraisers and bazaars. Unfortunately, do to the urgent nature of this fund-raiser we will not be able to accept requests for charity tables at no cost.
Best wishes,
Helen Siwak, Volunteer
Friends of Animals Nea Filadelphia

These poisonings were of 2 dogs - Yangos a very large (50kgs) loved, vaccinated, and tagged #361 and a smaller dog Bella who is neutered, vaccinated and tagged #372 - who live behind the Cemetery in NF. So we do not know where the poison was laid. The large dog is in a coma. Our mobile vet Dr. Adam tried desperately to assist them (Greek vets with offices close in the afternoons - 24 hour emergency clinics do not exist here - your dog can only get sick or hit by a car Monday to Saturday from around 10am to 2pm and then from 5pm to 8pm) but the dogs had to be driven to a vet in a different municipality after numerous phone calls were placed to find someone open on a Saturday afternoon.
Update: The smaller dog ingested a small amount of the poison, not glass. We have video of the large dog convulsing before falling into a coma that I will post tomorrow.

Bella will survive.
I found this Facebook group today that is offering large red STOP sign stickers to those who wish to distribute them throughout Greece. Stop Poisoning, Stop Abuse, and Stop Abandonment (in Greek). I have ordered 1,000 of the stickers in various quantities to sell and distribute at our events.
To order go here:

Yellow Poison in front of Shop in Zoographou

Close-up of Poison
Observation: I must assume that everyone already has a poison kit at home because I received not one phone call from concerned pet owners wanting one. Wake-up call! Unless your dog is trapped and caged in a prison in the panic room of your house, the odds are very very good it will come across poison on one of your outings. It is not just the parks, retail shopping streets are very dangerous too, and even fertilizer sprinkled around the base of a tree will kill your dog. This is a none discriminating act and luck has nothing to do with it not happening to YOUR dog.
You can pick-up a Poison Kit (10e) at our Open House every Wednesday at the Shelter. Directions are on our website at www.friendsofanimals-nf.com.
