| Who is the Filozoikos Nea Filadelphia? We originally were a small core group of 25 concerned citizens of Nea Filadelphia, Athens, Greece. Six of us were everyday volunteers. Six years ago we approached the municipal government with a proposal and petition to utilize the remaining cages at the closed zoo in the Alsos Nea Filadelphia Park as a temporary rescue shelter for the municipalities sick and injured dogs. Approval was granted and so what was to a be temporary shelter for few strays operated by a handful of friends, has now grown into a diverse group dedicated to the care of 100's of animals each month through emergency rescues, feeding, vaccinating, sterilizing and offering assistance and information via the internet and by mobile. We are physically available 24 hours a day to do what we can for the sick and injured of our municipality and online every day to offer assistance how ever we can, to those that need it. Currently the Mayor and council of Nea Filadelphia supports our charity by providing the temporary location in the park for the shelter and yearly dry food for the adult dogs. All other costs are ours and most months these costs run from 3,000 to 5,000 euros depending on how many surgeries are performed (such as sterilizations and broken bones from car accidents), medicines that are required, vaccinations, vermifugations and special food needed. In 2009, to raise this money, each month we held Open House's on Sundays which brought in about 400e total in donations, attended the month-end SPAZ Boot Sale (200e), sold memberships (about 120e), and every three months we held a two day seasonal bazaar which brought in about 3,000e. Our efforts helped raise about 18,000e which left us about 30,000e short of the actual costs and because of this shortage; we repeatedly went into our own personal accounts to find the difference and sometimes this created hardship within our families (both financially and emotionally). Because of the high costs of maintaining the shelter, we are forced to spend so many valuable hours each day scrambling to find money to pay for emergencies when we should in the community building awareness and educating people so that together we can stop the thinking that results in animal abuse. Last year a new volunteer joined our charity and brought fresh fund-raising ideas and created the very successful Wag-A-Thon event held on International Animal Day (October 4th). The widespread support of this event showed us that we can and must do more to help the companion animals of our community, in Athens, and in Greece, and this is why we make this plea for funds. Working with the strays and maintaining the shelter will always be our first priority but we need to expand what we do to include much more animal care education, not only for school children but all adults, parents, and grandparents. We can convince local businesses and community leaders to get involved in setting a higher standard of care for the strays that live on our streets and we can also provide a positive example for other communities that are struggling. We need to motivate people to protest against animal abuse and breeding for profit, and we need to share what we have learned and created with others so they may go out and make change themselves. 2010 is an important year for animal welfare in Greece and hope that you will support our efforts by purchasing a Membership (ranging from 30e to 250e). Each membership purchased brings us closer to spending more time in the schools educating, in the streets rescuing and healing, and in the courthouses protesting the cruel treatment of animals in our society. Be assured that every euro that we gather through memberships, donations, and events goes to those most in need - the strays that live around us. We have no paid employees, only devoted volunteers, and it is completely against our philosophy to financially reward anyone for their participation in our charity. Thank you so much for supporting our work! Kiki Karathanasi, President and Founder (on behalf of all Members and Volunteers) |
| Yes, I want to become a member of the Friends of Animals Nea Filadelphia (Reg. Charity #25700)! I am interested in assisting the Friends of Animals NF in aiding in the rescue and rehabilitation of abused and abandoned animals; finding foster and adoptive homes for homeless animals; and help stop the street stray problem through sterilization and educational programs. I acknowledge that my membership fees will be used to supply basic necessities above and beyond food, shelter, medical care, medicine, and facility maintenance and this makes me very happy! |
