| Greek Orthodox Churches around the world celebrate St. Modestos throughout the month of December. Traditionally the event begins with a blessing of the water, an invocation of the Holy Spirit upon God’s creation, and then each pet—or stuffed animal for those children without furry friends—is blessed with the holy water and the special prayer of St. Modestos. St. Modestos is the patron saint of animals in the Orthodox Church. Patriarch Modestos (AD 292) had a great affection for animals—he saw them as sublime and mysterious gifts from God. Often he would bless the livestock of the faithful, praying for their health and survival, and glorying in the vastness and beauty of all God made. In fact, he has been known for centuries as our patron saint of domestic animals. Click for more Details on St. Modestos Performing this historic Blessing of the Animals will be Father Alexandros and Father Michalis and we thank them profusely for their support of the first Blessing of the Animals in Athens in modern times. The location is at Aghia Triada Neas Filadelfias, near the old AEK stadium, in the middle of Fokon, Smyrnis and Chrysostomou Smyrnis streets. Dekeleias is 1 block West, the buses stop here and a the Perissos Metro (the electrico line that allows pets on board - muzzled or in carriers) is a few blocks East. Remember this event is not limited to dogs! Please bring any pet that you have and would like to be blessed. If your pet is ill or out of the country and cannot attend, bring a photo or stuffed animal that represents them. A large colourful Donation box will be at the entry way of the Church into which you can place Christmas gifts for the 60+ dogs that live in our Shelter. Such as large collars, leashes, medicines (Frontline/Efiprol, Stronghold, Augmentin), canned puppy/kitten food, blankets and toys. On World Animal Day (October 4th), the Filozoikos Nea Filadelphia held its first Blessing of the Animals in the name of St. Francis of Assisi, in the quaint and cozy St. Paul's Anglican Church in the centre of Athens. | Ορθόδοξες κοινότητες σε όλο τον κόσμο γιορτάζουν το όνομα του Αγίου Μόδεστου κάθε Δεκέμβριο. Παραδοσιακά γίνεται λειτουργία και αγιασμός, επίκληση για βοήθεια του Αγίου Πνεύματος προς κάθε πλάσμα του Θεού και κάθε ζωάκι συντροφιάς –ή ακόμα και λούτρινο για όσα παιδιά δεν έχουν αληθινό ζωάκι- ευλογείται με το αγιασμένο νερό και την ανάγνωση της προσευχής του Αγίου. Ο Άγιος Μόδεστος είναι ο προστάτης των ζώων για την Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία. Ο Πατριάρχης Μόδεστος (292 μ.Χ) είχε μεγάλη αγάπη για τα ζώα –τα έβλεπε ως θαυμαστά και μυστήρια θεία δώρα. Συχνά ευλογούσε τα κοπάδια των πιστών, προσευχόμενος για την υγεία και ευρωστία τους, δοξάζοντας την ομορφιά και το μεγαλείο σε ότι έπλασε ο Θεός. Η τοποθεσία θα ανακοινωθεί όσο πλησιάζουν οι ημέρες και θα εξαρτηθεί από τον αριθμό των σοβαρών απαντήσεων που θα λάβουμε λόγω του ότι υπάρχουν αρκετά μέρη στην Νέα Φιλαδέλφεια που μπορούν να φιλοξενήσουν από 100 έως 1000 άτομα με τα ζώα τους. Αυτή η γιορτή δεν θα είναι αποκλειστικά για σκύλους! Παρακαλώ φέρτε κάθε ζωάκι που έχετε και θα θέλατε να πάρει την ευλογία. Εάν το ζωάκι σας είναι άρρωστο ή εκτός Ελλάδας και δεν μπορεί να παρευρεθεί, φέρτε μία φωτογραφία ή ένα λούτρινο ζωάκι αντί για αυτό. Ένα μεγάλο πολύχρωμο κουτί δωρεών θα βρίσκεται στην είσοδο του ναού όπου θα μπορείτε να καταθέσετε τις χριστουγεννιάτικες δωρεές σας για τα πάνω από 60 ζώα που φιλοξενούνται στο καταφύγιό μας. Μεγάλα κολάρα, λουριά, φάρμακα (Frontline/Efiprol, Stronghold και Augumentin), κονσέρβες για κουτάβια / γατάκια και παιχνίδια. Την Παγκόσμια μέρα των ζώων (4/10/09) ο Φιλοζωικός της Νέας Φιλαδέλφειας οργάνωση την πρώτη Ευλογία υπέρ των ζώων στο όνομα του Αγίου Φραγκίσκου της Ασίζης στην όμορφη και φιλόξενη Αγγλικανική εκκλησία στο κέντρο της Αθήνας.
